Achalasia: what it is, symptoms and treatment
Achalasia is a disease of the esophagus characterized by the absence of peristaltic movements that push food into the stomach and by the narrowing of the esophageal sphincter, which causes difficulty in swallowing solids and liquids, night cough and weight loss, for example.
This disease can happen at any age, however, it is more common between the ages of 20 and 40 and has a gradual progression over the years. Achalasia treatment aims to widen the esophagus to allow food to pass properly into the stomach. For this, some techniques are used, such as filling a balloon inside the esophagus to permanently enlarge the muscle bundles, and the use of nitroglycerin and calcium blockers before meals, which help to relax the sphincter and reduce symptoms.
