Akineton – Medicine to treat Parkinson’s

Akineton is a drug indicated for the treatment of Parkinson’s, which promotes the relief of some symptoms such as sprains, tremors, contortions, muscle tremor, stiffness and motor restlessness. In addition, this medication is also indicated for the treatment of parkinsonian syndromes that are caused by medications.

This medicine has in its composition Biperiden, an anticholinergic agent, which acts on the central nervous system and which reduces the effects produced by acetylcholine on the nervous system. Thus, this medication works effectively to control the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease.


The price of Akineton varies between 26 and 33 reais, and can be purchased at pharmacies or online stores. 

How to take 

Generally, the indicated dose depends on the patient’s age, and the following doses are recommended: 

  • Adults: 1 tablet of 2 mg per day is recommended under medical advice. 
  • Children aged 3 to 15 years: the recommended dose varies between 1/2 to 1 2 mg tablet, taken 1 to 3 times a day, under medical advice. 

Side effects 

Some of Akineton’s side effects may include delusions, dry mouth, confusion, excitement, constipation, euphoria, memory problems, urinary retention, disturbed sleep, skin hives, hallucinations, convulsions, allergy, difficulty sleeping, agitation, anxiety or pupil dilation. 


This medication is contraindicated for children, patients with gastrointestinal tract obstruction, glaucoma, stenosis or megacolon and for patients with allergy to Biperiden or any other component of the formula.

In addition, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you are over 65 years old or you are being treated with other medications, you should talk to your doctor before starting treatment.
